A Proposal For UNESCO’s Recognition

by on Saturday, 8 January 2011No Comment | 378 views

During 2009-2010, many Indonesian cultural heritages such as Reog Ponorogo, Pendet Dance, and traditional song were claimed by another country. These facts led to the self-awareness to propose some dances and songs to be listed in UNESCO’s Cultural heritage. And in this year Bali will launch the real action to get recognition from UNESCO.

There are some numbers of Balinese dances which are proposed to UNESCO as World Cultural Heritages; Rejang, Baris, tari Sanghyang, , Legong Keraton, tari Barong dan Rangda, Joged Bumbung, Tari Pendet, Tari Jauk, Janger, Cak, Oleg Tamulilingan, Panji Semirang, Margapati, Manuk Rawa, etc. ‘We hope on July, this proposal will be submitted to UNESCO as World Cultural Heritage,” wished the chief of BPSNT (The Preservation Organization of History and Traditional Values), I Made Purna.

He also said the aim of this proposal is to claim these cultural heritages and as the result other countries will not be able to claim it again someday. However, Purna also admitted that the preservation of these cultural heritages can’t only be done by UNESCO but also Balinese community themselves. They should awaken the passion of teenager to dance Balinese dance to sing traditional song so that these dances and music will keep alive in everyday live.

Angklung, wayang, keris, and Batik have been declared as the cultural heritage from Indonesia. Hopefully, these Balinese dances together with Saman Dance from Aceh also get the recognition from UNESCO as the original culture from Indonesia. Soon after UNESCO place these dances in UNESCO cultural heritage list no other country on this earth which will claim them as their own cultural heritage.
