If you happen to be in Bali and you have some interest in pearl or want to know more about pearl, then a visit to Atlas South Sea Pearl’s hatchery will satisfy your curiosity and at the same time provides you a new way in spending your time in Bali rather that just sunbathing or watching the traditional dance.

Atlas South Sea Pearl’s Hatchery is located in Penyambangan village, Buleleng regency, in North Bali, as soon as you enter the Penyambangan village find a road sign “Atlas South Sea Pearl, 600 meter” on the right side of the street then turn right, after negotiating a narrow bumpy and dusty road take another right turn behind a modest beachfront hotel, pass the hotel then you will arrive at Atlas South Sea Pearl’s hatchery facilities.

The tour in Atlas South Sea Pearl’s hatchery facilities is surely a tour that will give you much more knowledge on the pearl and the oyster which produce the pearl since Atlas South Sea Pearl’s facilities runs all activities in relation with pearl production, from breeding the oyster to harvesting the pearl, from producing the food for oyster’s larva to holding operation of inserting pear nucleus into the oyster.

The tour to these facilities begins in the showroom, the showroom is not just displayed the jewelries that are made from pearls but also functions as café. In the showroom you will be given explanation on how to assess a good pearl and how to differentiate between a good one and bad one. The next destination is the oyster breeding facilities where you can see breeding process of the oyster; the tour guide will explain the breeding process and the development of oyster larva. Then the next destination is the algae production facilities where algae, important food for oyster larva, is produced, the tour guide will supply with the kinds of algae that are appropriate for oyster food and its producing process.

After the algae production facility, the guide will take you to the last place to be visited, the operation and harvesting facility. In this facility you can see the various stage of oyster growth; the guide will provide you much information on oyster growth and various stage of its life. In this facility you can also see a demonstration of nucleus insertion and pearl harvesting operation. Nucleus insertion operation is an operation of introducing a nucleus, the core of the pearl, together with a segment of muscle fiber (saibo) from a donor oyster into genital of another adult oyster, which is thereby programmed to produce a pearl; in response to the presence of this foreign body, the oyster coat it with nacre, in the end forming a pearl. As for harvesting operation, it is an operation to extract the pearl from the oyster without killing the oyster, since the oyster that produce a good pearl can undergo nucleus insertion operation one more time and usually producing bigger peal than the previous harvest.

The trip to Atlas South Sea Pearl’s hatchery surely give you more knowledge on pearl and its production process and it is better to end your trip by wrapping a beautiful pearl necklace or a pair of pearl earrings for your beloved one back home.
