“I now have a much better understanding of the relationship between music and dance, and, a greater sense about what it means to have a community ensemble of muisicans who actually work together, play together, collaborate, and live that spirit throught their music -making.” Lynda Paul - Musician, 2007 participant.
“I was honored and humbled over and over again by the talent, skill and artistry of our teachers, all of which they so lovingly shared with us.” Rosemary Candelario- Dancer/Choreographer, 2007 participant.
About Cudamani: Over the past ten years, Çudamani has seen its creative work grow in two directions: preserving its most basic roots, and exploring new areas, through teaching, collaboration and new creativity. Their music reflects their approach to life as they co-mingle the ancient and modern, globalization and spirituality. The musicians play on a hybrid gamelan orchestra “Semarandana” which was created in the 1980s. With seven tones rather than the usual five, this special gamelan allows Cudamani, the freedom to play in rare modes, more derived from older court and ritual gamelan. This type of ensemble is still quite rare in Bali, and Çudamani is on the forefront of work in this style. Dances performed the group include the classic pieces as well as new choreography. Their outstanding musicianship and dance technique add weight to the revival of classic works.
Cudamani has performed in the US, Canada, Italy, Greece, Europe and Japan. They have collaborated with master musicians, scholars and ethnomusicologists from around the world In 2001, Çudamani received a grant from the Ford Foundation for their work in preservation, innovation, and education. In 2007 Cudamani hosted a very successful Summer Institute and in the Fall of 07, Cudamani toured the much acclaimed production titled “Odalan Bali” across 16 cities in USA and Canada.
