On March 7th Balinese will celebrate Nyepi (Balinese New Year) but for the teenagers all over the island the special day is a day prior to nyepi on March 6th. On this day ogoh-ogoh (a giant puppet describing Balinese demon named Bhuta Kala) will be carried by the teenagers along the main streets of Bali in a grand parade.

Unfortunately, for this year some regions in Bali apply a rule that forbid to make and hold the ogoh-ogoh parade. Perhaps, the officials of those regions think that ogoh-ogoh party as the source of disturbances and dangers since many teenagers especially the young men have a tendency to get drunk while parading the ogoh-ogoh arousing a trouble or two or igniting firecrackers everywhere and everywhere that may harm someone else or ignite conflagration. But, do not worry others regions still do the tradition.

ogoh-ogoh

There are two weeks left to finish ogoh-ogoh. Surprisingly, most of Balinese teenagers which are joined in the sekaa teruna -teruni (youth organization which is part of Banjar) have almost finished their ogoh-ogoh frame to day. Sekaa teruna-teruni Canthi Graha, Banjar Dukuh said that it needs at least a month to finish an ogoh-ogoh fully, so that, they decided to work in the beginning of February. They had spent about Rp 700.000 for finishing the frame of ogoh-ogoh only. For the full form of ogoh-ogoh they usually spent about Rp 1.000.000. Sekaa teruna-teruni (youth organization) use their organization budget to pay the expenses of making the ogoh-ogoh. Sometimes they also get money from some companies as a sponsor or as donation.

ogoh-ogoh

According to the Sekaa teruna-teruni Canthi Graha, that ogoh-ogoh will be finished on time. They keep secret their ogoh-ogoh theme and title except for the members of sekaa teruna-teruni only since they want to join the ogoh-ogoh contest on March 6th and they want to make a surprise for the spectators. This contest can be joined by all of Banjar which belong to the Kesiman Village (East Denpasar).

ogoh-ogoh

For more information, this contest will be held at Tohpati village (East Denpasar). If you want to see the ogoh-ogoh contest you have to prepare your self since it will be crowded and full of surprise.
