Villa Awang Awang, Ubud

Awang Awang means “floating in the space between heaven and earth” – the perfect description for our villa, perched on the edge of a ravine with breathtaking views of the sacred Petanu river and the lush tropical forests.

Like many others, we fell in love with the ‘Island of the Gods’ and her people and feel very privileged to have been able to lease from the local owners, the land on which to build this peaceful haven.

The villa is a 50 minutes drive from the airport and is situated in the cool highlands 5km from Ubud – famous for its fine art galleries, restaurants and rich cultural life. The 10 minute drive is through stunning scenery of lush rice fields, mountains and the sacred volcano Gunung Agung towering in the distance.

Is designed by Balinese architect Ir. Ida Bagus Wiadnyana according to ancient traditions with the correct alignments toward the Holy Mountain. Traditional materials are used throughout to harmonize with the environment – alang alang thatched roofing, hand-made terracotta floor-tiles, stone and marble, all crafted by local artists. The house is cooled by fans and natural cross breezes over water gardens.

Entry is via the traditional Balinese gate-way protected by stone guardians and along a garden path through tranquil lotus and water-lily filled fish ponds. Antique Javanese doors open onto the main living area with its soaring alang alang roof and spectacular views from the open terrace.
