Ide Agung Anak Gde Agung, Four forgotten independence heroes get official recognition

E-Mail This Post/Page Print This Post/Page

The Jakarta Post

The government awarded four public figures National Hero status for their past contributions to the country at a ceremony held at the State Palace on Friday.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono handed out medals to the heroes’ descendants, witnessed by Vice President Jusuf Kalla and members of the cabinet

The National Hero status for Adnan Kapau Gani, Moestopo, Ignatius Slamet Riyadi and Ide Agung Anak Gde Agung, was decided through a presidential decree.

Politician Ide Agung Anak Gde Agung was awarded for his advocating Indonesia’s independence through negotiation instead of bamboo spears and bullets.

Recent research by a historian at the University of Indonesia, Professor Leirissa RZ, has confirmed the role of the Bijeenkomst Federaale Overleg, initiated by Anak Agung as part of his diplomatic strategy to consolidate Indonesia’s authority as a nation, in efforts to restore the archipelago’s sovereignty through diplomacy.

“The assumption that the late Anak Agung was involved in subversive actions has been proven wrong. We are in a healthy process of revising history, when we start to acknowledge that diplomacy holds an important role in the development of Indonesia,” said Anak Agung Gde Agung, the son of Anak Agung.

He explained, “My father began his fight in an early age. When he was made king (of Gianyar) at the age of 23, he already insisted that Bali free itself from the claws of the Dutch and be a part of Indonesia.”

Meanwhile, a former independence fighter in Bali, Desak Raka Nadha, 81, said that she didn’t agree with the government’s decision to make Ide Anak Agung Gde Agung a national hero.

“When we were in the struggle, we were the ones who had to face torture. Meanwhile, Anak Agung was a federalist who worked together with the Dutch government. That alone disqualifies him from the status of national hero,” she told The Jakarta Post in a phone interview. (lva)

The Bijeenkomst Federaale Overleg was established in year 1948. That year, the degradation of the Dutch goverment’s International political position has become worst.

At the same time Indonesian political position was getting stronger. Thats why AA Gde Agung decided to advocate Indonesia.

Maybe Leirissa should go back in year 1946 when AA Gde Agung was put him self againts the Indonesian strugle.

On top of all, I really like to read that book written by Leirissa. Is any body here has the information where I can find that book? I’ll try Gramedia first.

Yes, I met AAGA on several occasions, and have been his personal
guest at the Puri in Gianyar. I think I began to understand during
that time, what was motivating him to take the course he did post
WWII in the complex processes that followed.

The course he chose to take makes sense to me. However, I wouldn’t
call it heroic, not by a long shot. Political, yes. Astute, yes.
Strategically clever for his own interests, yes. Self-serving and
    effectively so, yes. Heroic, no.

Of course, I don’t have any place judging such a person, whose
experiences (and consequent choices) are so alien from my own.
Nevertheless, I wouldn’t put him on the top of a list of candidates
for Pahlawan Nasional (National Heroes). The story and the
circumstances are too complex and ambiguous to match with the term
    “hero”.

If considering Balinese “heroes” of recent times, I would be more
inclined to make a short list which included among others Ibu Gedong
Bagus Oka, Ida Pedanda Gede Ketut Keniten, and Anak Agung Made Jelantik.

The uproar that has arisen about AAGA being “heroized” says it all.

    It says, “no”.

Just like adding salt to the open wound as the Indonesian government adding insult to the real heroes who fought for the independence in 1946 and prior.

Still fresh in my memory on my late father cremation ceremony, how his old comrades saluted him in the cemetery in their yellowish veteran uniforms and after the ceremony how most of our old fighters catching public transport to go home.

Recently i have lost an uncle, again i have witness repeated scene, on the way i have passed a group of our old fighters on their old rusty push bike, have they been looked after?Do their pure soul need to change to become politician to be looked after?

Our veteran (the real one) knows Ide Anak Agung Gede Agung chooses the opposite side to Igusti Ngurah Rai and his team, the real National Hero.
How can Ide Anak Agung Gede Agung be Equal to Igusti Ngurah Rai when he is under the Dutchs Payroll all those time, and how can we explain to those families who has been rampaged and torture and their belonging has been savaged including the family keris by Ide Anak Agung Gede Agung team just because their supported Igusti Ngurah Rai and his team. Its always two side of a coin , but both can not be in same side. Its just not “adds up”
