Keeping Balinese Language Alive

The revival which is experienced by Balinese language in recent year is still considered not enough to fight degeneration of the popularity of Balinese language. Many Balinese agree that more and more Balinese using less Balinese language in their daily life.
In urban area, role of Balinese language in daily-life communication is begun to be replaced by Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian language). The number of parents using Balinese language to communicate with their children is getting fewer, not to mention the unpopularity of Balinese language in the everyday intermingle of urban Balinese youngsters. The low availability of Balinese language teachers in schools also contributes to the degeneration of Balinese language along with other factors.
In order to address this phenomena, a Conference of Balinese Language was held from 17th – 18th November 2008 in Denpasar. This conference resulted many recommendations to prevent Balinese language from extinction. One of the recommendations that is hoped to bring a new spirit to the Balinese Language is the recommendation to revise the Bali’s Regional Act on Balinese Language, Letters and Literature. It is hoped that the revision on this act can give more space and role for Balinese to develop.
