DENPASAR (Antara): Bali Police have named 33 suspects in the thefts of dozens of sacred effigies from temples across the island.

At least 96 sacred effigies, known locally as Pretima, have been reported stolen since January, Bali Police spokesman Sr. Comr. A.S. Reniman said Wednesday.

Pretima are symbols of gods for Bali’s Hindus. The effigies are generally kept in temples and used during religious ceremonies.

“We have nearly completed the case files on 11 suspects and we will soon submit the files to the prosecutor’s office,” Reniman was quoted by Antara news agency as saying Wednesday.

He said most of the thefts, or 26, occurred in Karangasem regency, with 19 cases reported in Gianjar regency and 11 in Buleleng regency.
