Located on the side of Ubud’s vital street, Kafe Batan Waru lies conveniently in the heart of Ubud provides easy access for the visitors. Batan Waru is not just a superb choice for breakfast but also an excellent place for dinner. An expression of classic, simple, fresh, and clean restaurant with pleasant atmosphere during the day will be enhanced at night, when the street entrance is lit with candles. But the pleasant atmosphere is not the only thing Batan Waru has to offer, its interesting and delicious selections of western and Indonesian food which caters to all tastes is surely the main reason for the visitors to spent their time in Batan Waru.

Batan Waru is already well known as a perfect place for breakfast, try its eggs Benedict with a cup of coffee, an excellent breakfast to start the day but if you miss its Indonesian and Balinese dishes you surely miss the best part of Batan Waru. I should warn you before hand that the Indonesian and Balinese dishes in Batan Waru is far from being bland, the flavor is rich and will stay long after you finish the dishes.

For an appetizer, try urap pakis, wild fern tips with roasted coconut and heavily enriched with Balinese spices. Another excellent choices are Lawar Salad, a traditional Balinese Lawar, but without the meat. Young jackfruit and papaya with coconut, crisped onions, leaf of Kaffir limes and other spices and Otak-Otak, fish cakes that have been roasted in a banana leaf, and a chilli and peanut sauce.

For the main course Batan Waru offers wide range of selections, a compendium of magnum opus dishes from various parts of Indonesia. The Rendang of Sumatra with a very tender beef that have been simmered in Sumatran spices. Javanese Soto Ayam, a bowl of noodle soup with chicken pieces, turmeric and herbs, is surely worth every single rupiah you spent. From Manado in Celebes island comes Ayam Rica-Rica, grilled chicken in a Manadonese chilli and shitake mushroom sauce, it will surely make you crave for more.

For Balinese dishes Batan Waru offers an excellent choices range from Tum Ayam, parcels of finely minced chicken and young papaya and Balinese spices, wrapped in a banana leaf to Bebek Mekuah, a half duck that has been slowly simmered in spices. From Sate Ayam Serapah, skewered chunks of chicken that has been pre-marinated in spices, then grilled to the legendary Babi Guling which has to be reserved a day in advance.

For vegetarians Batan Waru shows its best in Semur Tahu, a mixture of tofu, round eggplants and shitake mushrooms, in a coconut milk broth with garlic and soy and Tempe Bacem, coriander marinated tempe slices, sautéed and served with steamed vegetables another excellent option is Terung Kalasan, roasted Asian eggplants with a mild chilli coconut sauce.

For dessert, Batan Waru provides excellent Apple Blueberry Crumble, Chocolate Tartine with Raspberry Salsa, Broadway Cheesecake, and Florida Lime Pie, capped by Arabica cappuccinos and espressos, served hot or iced.

A great spot to have a beer while the wife is shopping for jewelry on this street. We sit towards the back which is away from the street. The crispy dusck is a real treat too. Always a good meal at a resonable price
