If Balinese have a long standing tradition of celebrating wedding anniversary, many Balinese will celebrate their wedding anniversary yesterday (2/25/09). Yesterday was the best wedding day for Balinese. For hundreds of years Balinese believe that on that particular day which is called “selikur galungan” is an auspicious day for wedding ceremony. When somebody asks Balinese the best day for wedding ceremony, “selikur galungan” will be their first answer.

Why?

For Balinese to hold a wedding ceremony on auspicious day is an indispensable matter. They believe that a good wedding day will bring happiness into the family. To find a good day Balinese usually consult the Balinese traditional calendar or ask a priest to choose the right day based on ancient astronomical scripture which is called Wariga. In choosing a good wedding day many considerations have to take, first Balinese traditional calendar is an intricate kind of calendar, compare to Gregorian calendar which used “week cycle” that consist of seven days.

Balinese traditional calendar consist of ten different cycles, they are Eka Wara consist of 1 day, Dwi Wara consist of 2 days, Tri Wara consist of 3 days, Catur Wara consist of 4 days, Panca Wara consist of 5 days, Sad Wara consist of 6 days, Sapta Wara consist of 7 days, Asta Wara consist of 8 days, Sanga Wara consist of 9 days, Dasa Wara consist of 10 days. Adding to these intricate cycles of calendar is the Pawukon cycle that has to be considered also, this cycle consists of 30 Wuku each wuku consist of 7 days. Accidentally, or maybe fortunately there is one day that all these cycles and calendar bestow their best time for wedding ceremony, the day is “Selikur Galungan”. It is called “Selikur Galungan” which means 21 days before Galungan. This day occur every 210 days on Wednesday, Warigadean (based on Pawukon cycle / Hindu lunar calendar).
