Coldest Month in Bali

by on Thursday, 31 July 2008No Comment | 1,083 views

Yesterday, a friend of mine complained that the temperature in the morning is lower than other month and it makes him quite reluctant to take his morning bath. So I give my best shot to explain the phenomenon of low temperature in the morning. And here is the best answer I can think of:

The low temperature in the morning is a sign that Sasih Karo (the second month in traditional Caka calendar usually falls around the end of July or early in August) is on its sway. Sasih Karo is the coldest month compare to the other month. The temperature is in the lowest level especially in the morning. It is quite warm during but the day during the night, a thick blanket is needed.

Sasih Karo can be compare to autumn in the west, on this month, the heat of dry season took most of the water and no rain can be expected. The leaves of some trees began to fall. Sasih Karo is usually considered as the peak of dry season. Since when Sasih Karo is over Sasih Katiga (the third month in traditional Caka calendar usually falls around September) will come and the rain will begin to fall, and in October, (Sasih Kapat, the fourth month in traditional Caka calendar) it is a spring time in Bali, the flowers will begin to bloom.

Sasih Karo is also believed as a bad month for those who easily getting caught by influenza or for those who has rheumatic problem. But don’t worry as a Balinese poet says in a poem on Sasih Karo:
Sasih Karo in Bali, be prepared with a blanket
and a cup of hot coffee in the morning
