About Us
BALAM Dance Theatre (BALAM) was founded in 1979 by Islene Pinder or Ibu-Iene as she is known in Bali who was a CUNY professor of dance and choreographer. She was later joined in 1990 in the directorship of BALAM by choreographer/dance-artist, Carlos Fittante. BALAM’s fusion emanates from the movement skills of its dancers, which include Ballet, Baroque, Lester Horton, Karate and Noh movement styles merged with Balinese dance. This aesthetic alchemy presents a vision of Contemporary-World dance and represents a convergence of esoteric and modern sensibilities.

BALAM has been featured at a number of festivals and venues including First Night New York, Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors, Dancers Responding to AIDS, Career Transitions for Dancers, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Queer Festival New York, COOL & DUMBO Dance Festivals at WHITE WAVE, La MAMA ETC, Asian Pacific-American Heritage Festival, Museum of Natural History, Morse College at Yale University; to mention a few. For five consecutive years BALAM has been awarded support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs for its educational lecture¬performances for the Freshman Year Initiative Program at Lehman College, Bronx, NY. BALAM has toured internationally including the Bali Arts Festival, 2nd Encuentro Internadonal de Danza Contemporario in Cancun, Mexico (where its duet Eden was censored), and most recently in the 2005 village festival in Ubud, Bali. BALAM has been acknowledged by the Indonesian Consulate of New York for it’s and ground breaking, cross-cultural work.
