Reamker, the Khmer version of the Ramayana
Preah Ream (Rama) and Kneeing Sedan (Seta) go into exile into the forest. Kong Reap (Ravenna)
appears while they are having a rest. He sees Neang Seda and wants to abduct her. He metamorphoses into a golden deer with the intention of seducing her. Neang Seda asks Preah Ream to catch the deer, he agrees and chases it.
While they arw waiting, Neang Seda and Preah Leak (Laksmana) hear Preah Ream shouting for help. Neang Seda orders Preah Leak to follow the voice. Before leaving, Preah Leak draws a circle around Neang Seda, protecting her from any enemies, and forbids her from stepping out of the circle.
When seeing Preah Leak moving away, Krong Reap approaches Neang Seda in the form of a begging ascetic. He asks for some money. As soon as Neang Seda leaves the protective circle, he changes back into the King of Demons, abducts her, and takes her to his Kingdom of Langka.
As soon as Preah Ream hears about Krong Reap’s fraud, he goes back to Neang Seda, but cannot find her. He calls Hanuman, the white monkey, and commands him to find Neang Seda and entrust him with a ring to be given to her. Looking for Neang Seda, Hanuman enters the Kingdom of Langka, gives her the ring and tells her Preah Ream is on his way to release her. Preah Ream gathers his monkey army with the intention of fighting the Kingdom of Langka. He builds a bridge over the sea that is destroyed by the army of Sovann Macha, the golden mermaid. Hanuman seduces her and succeeds in convincing her to rebuild the bridge.
