Kamban A poet lived in 12th century in Tanjore District in Tamil Nadu, India. There are 10.418 verses in six kandas (chapter). As in Valmiki Ramayana, there is no Uttarakanda in Kamba Ramayana. Kamba imports into his narrattion the colour of his own time and place. Kamba has not merely taken this theme from the greatest of Sanskrit epics but as followed it in almost every detail step by step.
Kamba Ramayana
The play stars with the poet Kamba invoking the supreme truth and showing gratitude to Valmiki, the author of Ramayan. He goes on to add his flavour of introducing the divine couple by dramatizing their first meeting. Rama and Sita remain spell bound. Indeed are words required when paerted beloved meet.
Rama takes Sita’s hand by winnin the challenge of breaking die Siva dhanush. Adding sparkle to the events, Dasaratha decides to crown Rama. Now the treacherous Kooni jerk everybody out of this ecstasy by poisoning Kaikeyi’s mind and causes the banishment of Rama who is followed by Sita and Lakshamana. Friendship finds a new abode in Rama and Guha, the tribal king who is ready to give everything to Rama.
Bharata, shocked at the happenings in Ayodhya, rushes to the forest to bring back Rama, but Rama orders Bharata to rule the kingdom on his behalf and noble Bharata accepts to be his representative.
Rama and Sita lead a very happy life in the forest. Lustful Soorpanaka, sister of Ravana tries to entice die royal brother, but returns insulted. Soorpanaka now uses Ravana’s lust as her weapon to avenge her insult. Ravana abducts Sita with the help of Maricha and slays Jatayu who fights to save Sita.
Rama extends hands of friendship with monkey king Sugreeva and promises to get back his kingdom from Vali. Sugreeva in turn vows to help Rama in search of Sita. Hanuman who was die part of monkey force the went in the southern direction jumps across the ocean and finds Sita pining for Rama in Lanka. Hanuman having burnt Lanka and thereby warning Ravana retums to Rama with the massage from Sita. Ravana’s peril blind his intellect from the righteous advice of his brothers. Banished by Ravana, Vibhisana surrenders to Rama. The might of Ravana is destroyed by righteousness of Rama.
Mother Sita walks through the fire to proclaim the chastity.
Noble Bharata decides to give up his life at end of the tenure of Rama’s return. Hanuman arrives with the timely news of Rama’s return and stop Bharata.
Ayodhya rejoices at the union brothers and coronation of Rama.
Chinmaya Yuva Kendra has staged Kamba Ramayan more then 50 times in various parts of Tamil Nadu, India and also in Sri Lanka. All the songs in the play are sung by popular Indian playback singers Shri S.P. Balasubramaniam and Smt. Vani Jayaram Music rendered by Shri K.V. Mahadevan.
