Involvement in Balinese dance:
I began studying dance in the court of Karangasem from the age of 7 yrs and later went to villages to continue my studies with some of Bali’s greatest dance masters: Ida Bagus Raka Bongkasa, I Kakul, I Mario and Gusti Biang Sengog. I mostly danced Oleg and Condong Legong for the well known Gong Peliatan under leadership of Anak Agung Mandera. I also was invited to dance for other groups in Bali until I moved to Bandung to pursue studies in Medicine in 1965. From 1960 on, I was often invited to dance at the state presidential palaces in Tampaksiring and Jakarta, and perform in cultural missions to other countries all over Asia and Europe. I was a dancer of the Indonesian Pavillion for a three month period at the World Expo 70 in Osaka, Japan. Several heads of state like Kaisar Hirohito, Prince Akihito, Kim II Sung, Queen Sirikit & King Bhu Mi Bol, Prince Sihanouk, President Bill Clinton and Hillary (during their visit in 1994), Queen Beatrix (1995) have all seen my dance and been able to appreciate art as a medium for cultural understanding between nations.

My grandfather, Anak Agung Bagus Djelantik, the last king of Karangasem, East Bali, was known to be a serious lover of art and architecture. While my grandfather of mother’s side, Piet Zwart, was a Dutch avant-garde designer in his times. These two facets of art – the traditional and the contemporary, East and West – inherited from my two grandfathers are always features of my interest and choreography.

Although busy in the profession as a doctor with postgraduate research and involvement internationally in community ear and hearing health, I have continuously make efforts to introduce Legong, my favorite dance, to a wider audience. Teaching dance, especially the Legong Peliatan style, has always been my passion. I was one of the first teachers of the Indonesian Dance Academy (STSI) in Bandung. I taught children and the youth through Gita Saraswati Dance Course in Bandung and privately. During post graduate studies in Munich, Germany, I was active as teacher and dancer with the Cara Bali Gamelan Gruppe (1985-1988) and now I am a guest dance teacher of the Gamelan Sekar Jaya in El Cerrito/Berkeley ( since 2006).

Finally in 1991, established my own group, Bengkel Tari Ayubulan (Ayubulan Dance Workshop) in Bandung, West Java. Here, besides teaching traditional classical Legong dance forms, I have the opportunity to find expression for experiments in movement. Lately I have been studying and choreographing as a solo mask dancer.

In 1997 active member of the executive board of the Indonesian Society for Performing Arts (MSPI), and chaired the MSPI Mileniart seminar and workshop in Tirtagangga Bali, Sept 1999. Since 2001 until now appointed as member of the MSPI Board of Trustees.

      Dear Ayu Bulantrisna Djelantik,

I was a guest performer at Sekar Jaya in 1998 and 2004, and I would very much like to purchase a copy of your choreography of Sitarasmi and Bedoyo Legong Calonarang.

Could you tell me how to go about doing this?

      Many thanks,

      Maria

Lestarikan terus budaya Bali
