Red Light for Legong

Saturday, August 25th, 2007 by Sidarta Wijaya

Guruh Sukarno Putra, dancer and choreographer expressed his fear on the extinction of some legong style in a press release of Mengenang Sang Guru Dance Performance on Thursday, 8/23/07, in Peliatan Ubud. The son of the first President of Indonesia said that there were dozens of legong style exist in late 1960s and early 1970s, but only few manage to survive until the present time; “a red light for Legong” he added.

There is a bitter fact in his word, many legong styles such as Legong Taro, Legong Menjali of North Bali, Legong Bedulu, Legong Badung are in the edge of extinction since there is no regeneration process going on for these legong styles. As a matter of fact each legong style has their own characteristic of beauty for example the Legong Peliatan has a characteristic of rapid trembling movements and extremely bend-to-the-front body posture. It will a great lost for Balinese dance if these rare style vanish permanently from the island.

The Rise of Tuna

Friday, August 24th, 2007 by Sidarta Wijaya

Ten or twenty years ago it was unthinkable to use Tuna for offering; turtle was the only sea creature use widely for offering besides the regular land animal such as pig, duck or chicken. The ban on using turtle for offering in early 1990s and the steady rise of pig, duck, and chicken price force Balinese to find alternative meat for offering and Tuna is the most favorite alternative meat.

Tuna meat has some advantages over other meats - the abundance of supply, cheap and simple cooking process. These contribute greatly for the popularity of Tuna as alternative meat for offering. Balinese usually purchase frozen Tuna, grind it and mix it with grated coconut and spices to make sate lilit for selam (a kind of offering which does not use pork) offering. The teenagers of Bali also love to make sate lilit from Tuna, eat as accompaniment of Tuak or Arak (traditional Balinese liquor) since it is quite affordable for their pocket.

In Search for the Past

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007 by Sidarta Wijaya

Yesterday, our temple priest, some elders and I went to a house of a prince in order to find out a palm leaves manuscript which contains the history of our temple and all information in relation with our temple – when its was built, who built it, what is the function of it, etc. Our search proved to be futile but at least we found new information on whereabouts the palm leaf manuscript can be found. This is just one of many stories of Balinese persistent search of their past.
