On Saturday, 2nd August 2008, a memorial ceremony was held in Ujung Water Palace as a tribute to the late Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik; son of the last king of Karangasem, founder of Walter Spies Foundation with immense contribution to the art and culture of Bali such as founding Listibya (an agency for cultural preservation in Bali). He also arranged many spectacular festivals to continue Spies’ work to foster emerging artists. Outside the art and culture circle, Dr Anak Agung Made Djelantik was renowned as a doctor who had worked for many years with the World Health Organization to combat Malaria in Africa, the Middle East and throughout Indonesia. He was the first Balinese Director of Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

The memorial ceremony began around 4 pm with a discussion on Dr. Djelantik’s biography “Against All Odds” which was written by Idanna Pucci. The discussion involved participants from various background range from artists such as Endo Suwanda, to writers such as Idanna Pucci, Cok Sawitri, from poet such as Wayan “Jengki” Sunarta to scholar such as Dr. A. The book discussion was only one of many events that were held in this memorial ceremony. After the book discussion was over, came story tellings, dinner, entertainment by Balinese singers, and dance performance by Dr. Djelantik’s children.

But these programs were not all Dr. Djelantik’s memorial had to offer. There was a great exhibition of Dr. Djelantik’s photos and watercolor paintings. The watercolor paintings of Anak Agung Made Djelantik which are exhibited here depict the fateful events in Anak Agung Made Djelantik life, from early in the childhood up to retirement years. The theme of the paintings range from the black magic to culture shock, from temple to boat race, in short the themes of the paintings cover all aspects of Anak Agung Made Djelantik life.
