Ericsson has been selected by PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk (XL) to build the latter’s 3G/WCDMA network in Indonesia by providing High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) to enhance the end-user experience. In a statement on Sept 21, Ericsson said it would also supply XL with its Mobile Softswitch Solution for nationwide deployment, as well as business consulting services.

Under the agreement, Ericsson will supply radio access products and be responsible for the performance and improvement of the radio network, as well as providing operations and maintenance services.

It said the 3G network deployment included Java, Bali and Lombok, with a focus on six major cities.

Ericsson will also provide business consulting to support XL in its preparation for the launch of its 3G network.

“Ericsson’s Mobile Softswitch Solution will also be deployed to upgrade and expand XL’s 2G and 3G networks across Indonesia and is the first step in the operator’s evolution to an all-IP network.

“This solution supports rapid and cost-efficient growth of capacity and coverage,” it said.

XL president director Hasnul Suhaimi said: “Our decision to form this mutually beneficial partnership with Ericsson is based on Ericsson’s experience in providing cutting-edge telecommunication technology and reliability in delivering its services.”

XL is one of the leading telecommunication companies in Indonesia. It is a subsidiary of TM, one of the largest telcos in Asia.
