Finally Lombok Has An International Airport
Start from October 1st, you can enjoy direct international flights to Lombok Island. Indonesian and NTB government decided to open Lombok International Airport replacing the old Selaparang airport. Boeing 737 belonging to national carrier Garuda Indonesia from Soekarno-Hatta Airport Jakarta was the first jet landed at the newest international airport in Indonesia.
Garuda Indonesia landed on the opening day carried West Nusa Tenggara Governor Zainul Majdi, Director General of Air Transport Harry Bhakti, and all people who sold the 551 hectare of the land for airport area. Besides, thousand of locals were also there to see the opening ceremony. Many of them refused the project of airport construction at the first time but now they hoped that the new airport gain success without having big problems. A local cleric also wished that this new airport which cost $108 million can accommodate the pilgrimage journey to Mecca.
From total $ 108 million (IDR 945.8 billion), state-run Angkasa Pura I shouldered IDR 679 billion while the provincial and Lombok administration covered the rest.
Finally this sister island of Bali has international airport. This step taken by Nusa Tenggara Barat administration is to boost tourism which is growing in Lombok. Lombok International Airport is located in Pujut district in central Lombok regency, 40 km from Mataram (the capital city of the island).
