Honeymoon Planning Tips
Getting married is one of the most joyous times in a person’s life, and making that memory last is always a good idea. That is why planning the perfect honeymoon to accent your marriage is key. A honeymoon is the time you spend with your newlywed spouse after your marriage — consider it a vacation that comes standard with any wedding. Now a honeymoon can range from sitting at home with your spouse, escaping everyday obligations, only lifting a finger to play bingo or ordering in some take-out. Honeymoons can also be very extravagant. Taking you and your spouse to far away, exotic locations. Regardless of what you do, here are some honeymoon planning tips to make sure your marriage finishes up right.
1Always to book a double bed room in the hotel.
You may laugh, but it’s important when reserving hotels, especially abroad, and crucial if you are going on a cruise.
2 Avoid making reservations for an early departure the morning after your wedding.
If you’re planning an evening reception, you can be sure you’re not going to bed early on your wedding night. A later flight or train reservation may save you from walking bleary-eyed through the airport or the railway station..
3 Don’t skimp on your accommodations.
Maybe on other trips, but not a honeymoon. The ambience of your accommodation could be the single most important aspect of your honeymoon trip as most of the couples tend to spend max. time there. Even if you think you won’t spend much time in your room, you’ll be sorry if your accommodations are not special.
4 Set a honeymoon budget
Before you go, agree about what you’ll splurge on and where you’ll skimp to avoid any possible money hassles en route. (Click here for our honeymoon budget planner).
5 Both of you should be involved in planning.
After all, this honeymoon is for both of you. If one of you does all the work, he/she’ll feel guilty if things don’t go perfectly. If you don’t take part in the planning, you’ll probably end up dissatisfied.
6 Don’t ignore cost-saving travel packages.
Talk to a travel agent. Many packages will allow you to have all the frills you want…and save you money.
7 Plan to spend some time away from each other doing separate things
You’ll both be happier if you plan one or two separate activities on your honeymoon….and think how much fun you’ll have sharing your experiences with each other.
8 Don’t Keep mum about being honeymooners.
Don’t be bashful…especially with hotels, cruise lines, restaurants…Tell them when you make your reservations and you’re likely to enjoy special treatment.
9 Don’t rely too much on friends and family.
Ask for recommendations from friends and family, but don’t let yourselves be overly influenced. Do your own thing. It’s your honeymoon after all.
10 Consult with a travel agent
A capable agent will help you plan a honeymoon that’s right for the two of you– at a price you can afford.
Dollars & Sense
* Take a major credit card with you to reduce the amount of cash you need to carry, and provide emergency funds in case you need it.
* Try to change your money at national banks, as they usually offer the best rate of exchange.
* Traveller’s cheque are a safer method for carrying money and can be replaced if lost or stolen. Order well before your departure date at your bank or an exchange bureau.
* Keep a small calculator or currency converter on hand.
Health Check
Include the following items in your first-aid kit. Remember to carry all medications in their original prescription bottles to avoid questions at customs.
* Sunscreen; insect repellent; antihistamine for insect bites; antibiotic ointment.
* Plasters for blisters; medication for motion sickness; water-purifying tablets.
* Anti-diarrhea tablets; antacid tablets; vitamin B for hangovers.
* Decongestant tablets for head cold; throat lozenges; headache tablets.
Love and Marriage
* Purchase some duty-free bubbles or wine as you leave home, as alcohol can be expensive overseas.
* Buy small presents for each other while on honeymoon. ‘Souvenir’ is the French word for ‘remember’.
* If your wedding photos, or even some snapshots, have been developed already, take some with you to enjoy looking over.
* Make sure you get plenty of photographs on your own camera of both of you together. (Take film with you, as international and resort prices can be high.)
The Nitty Gritty
* Pack an extra bag or expandable suitcase for honeymoon purchases.
* Ensure your luggage is labelled both on the outside and inside with your name, hotel address and phone number.
* Stop newspaper delivery and arrange for your mail to be collected or held at the post office during your trip.
* Transfer the addresses of friends and family to whom you’ll want to send postcards to a small, travel-sized notebook.
