Indiana Jones in Gunung Kawi

Gunung Kawi is another tourism attraction besides Goa Gajah which can fascinate travelers with its grandeur monument and history. Gunung Kawi is a complex of Candi (shrine) carved on the cliff face. The 9  Candi has connection with the most prominent Bali Empire in Udayana dynasty. This is the place where the King’s, his two children’s, Anak Wungsu’s concubines’, and the prime ministers’ ash are put on.

Gunung Kawi is situated in Tampak Siring, Gianyar, approximately 35km from Denpasar. The travelers need to go down 315 stairs to reach the complex of candi near River Pakerisan and wonderful rice terrace. After climbing down the steps which are broken in some parts, many travelers are hypnotized by this grandeur stone carvings containing 10 candi which dates back to the 11th century.

A traveler coming from Sweden said that there was Indiana Jones feeling when she explored the ancient big statue and carvings and small caves. The beautiful valley setting is also the attractive thing that can be enjoyed by all visitors. On the entrance there is a café which is a nice spot to enjoy the meals while relishing spectacular natural surroundings.

As other tourist destinations which road is lined with vendors, Gunung Kawi is also flocked by many vendors selling wood carving and other souvenirs who are in fact a bit annoying. If you don’t want to be disturbed by them you should go to this holy place around 08.00. However, some tourists admitted that some vendors and the stuffs were nice. Let alone, if you are lucky you will be taught to carve by an old craftsman just like Khristy did who visited Gunung Kawi on July 2011.
