Another Version of Pandanus War
Makare-kare or war by using thorny pandanus leaves is not just belong to Tenganan Pagringsingan village; its sister village, Tenganan Dauh Tukad which located o the west side of crystal clear water on the south east side of Tenganan Pagringsingan also has its own version thorny pandanus war.
As in Tenganan Pagringsingan, Makare-kare in Tengagan Dauh tukad can be defined as a war dance that involves two bare-chested dancers equipped with thorny pandanus leaves as a weapon and a shield called tamiang made of woven rattan. They attack each other with thorny pandanus leaves sometimes the wounds inflicted by these thorny leaves spill blood. There is no jury to control the fight but there are few people, called “tukang belas”, which have a duty to stop and supervise the fight. There are also three or four people act as an “umbul-umbul”, manager of the fighter, their primary duty is to select and match the fighters based on their age, and size of the body.
The rules which are applied are also quite the same
1. It is forbidden to hit the opponent on the face.
2. It is forbidden to bring a knife or Kris into the arena.
3. It is forbidden to clinch the opponents.
4. All fighters have to be bare-chested.
The promise which is made by both of the dancers to refrain from hitting the face, before the dance begins, is also observed in applied here.
The striking difference between Tenganan Pagringsingan’s and Tenganan Dauh Tukad’s version of Makare-kare is the attires of the dancers. The dancers of Tenganan Pagringsingan’s version of Makare-kare wear gringsing cloth while the dancers of Tenganan Dauh Tukad’s versin do not wear gringsing cloth.
The best thing of Tenganan Dauh Tukad’s version of Makare-kare is the opportunity to enjoy the dance and taking photos of this war dance. The Tenganan Pagringsingan’s version is already well known and lot of people flock to watch it, minimizing the opportunity of enjoying the spirit and excitement of the dance.
Makare-kare in Tenganan Dauh Tukad is usually held a week after Tenganan Pagringsingan.
