UN has been announced Batik as a cultural heritage. It is not surprising because Batik indeed has uniqueness containing symbol and cycle of life. Almost in each area in Indonesia Batik has its own typical design which can be differentiate from one to another. In Solo city, central Java, original Batik which mostly has dark brown color is centrally produced in a district named Laweyan.

Laweyan is situated closely to the hub of Solo city in the South and West Solo. Far before the independence of Indonesia, Laweyan has made the history with the emergence of Islamic Trade Unions, which was established by K.H Samanhudi, one of the leading Batik merchant. The rapid development of Batik production in this village made it a culture for the villagers.

It was older people who always wear Batik since the dark brown color and the design were not so matching with the youngster’s fashion. But since a couple of years ago Batik has been modified and tailored to youngster’s taste. The batik workers are so creative to change the color and the design that batik is slowly but surely accepted by the youngsters and even more for those people who really care about the fashion.

Laweyan also do that. Nowadays, Laweyan’s villagers produce three kinds of Batik; Batik Tulis, batik Cap, and Batik Printing. They paint various Batik pattern on a fabric using the tools named canting and malam before the tailor change it to be elegant clothes. The process which takes time and concentration results in sophisticated and pricier Batik Tulis. In the meantime, Batik Cap and Printing need less time and result in inexpensive price.  Laweyan not only sells Batik fabrics/clothes but also other merchandises such as tribal belt which has Batik pattern.

On the next trip to Central Java or Jogjakarta don’t forget to visit Laweyan where you can see the process of making Batik and enjoy the excursion in Ndalem Tjokrosoemartan, a house which was officially announced as Batik Monument.
