Many Coins and Paper Money on Kuningan Day: Bongan Gede

by on Monday, 20 December 2010No Comment | 146 views

Every Kuningan Day, people of Banjar Bongan Gede, Tabanan Regency, guide their ancestors to go back to their ‘home’. They give many offerings and money as the provisions. The family throws many coins into the air for their ancestors while children are ready to catch the money up. Hup!

After 10 days being together with the family, on Kuningan Day the ancestors should leave to their ‘home’. The community of Banjar Bongan Gede has unique tradition called “Masuryak” to guide their ancestor. This unique tradition can not be found in other district in Bali except in Bongan Gede. Although, ‘Masuryak’ has been holding for years, the community still has no idea about its origin.

‘Masuryak’ is preceded by praying at each home and followed by visiting relatives. This aims to keep the relationship among the big family going well. After that, all offerings will be brought to the main gate. This is a symbol of escorting the ancestors to reach the heaven.

Then, family will give the ancestors some money as the provisions. This is the core of ‘Masuryak’ ritual. Each of family will provide some coins in which the totals are different. These coins and some paper money then are tossed into the air while children are waiting to catch the money up. Based on the secret informer, on last Kuningan, there was a successful man who tossed coins and paper money in which the total was USD 1000. Wow!

Bali has always unique thing to share. This time Banjar Bongan Gede showcases its unique thing on Kuningan Day. Do not miss this area in the next 6 months, exactly on Kuningan day. Maybe you will come back to home with some coins in your pocket.
