by on Tuesday, 20 March 2012No Comment | 420 views

Nyepi (Silent Day) is always preceded by some rituals and celebrations. Those rituals are : Pangrupukan (one day before Silent day) and Melasti or Makiis (several days before Silent day).  Hindu-Balinese community who lives outside Bali strictly keeps the customs. Although, they are the minority but they have no problem to implement those customs. Just like Hindu-Balinese community in Bali they also will do Melasti or Makiis on this week.

Hindu community in Tengger, Lumajang, is the one who always consistent to do the customs. Tenggerese always do Melasti in sandy area, Goa Sumber Widodaren, Tosari Dstrict, Pasuran region. Before the crowds walking to Goa Sumber Widodaren to carry out the core of Melasti, Hindu Priest leads them to pray all together .

When Tenggerese prefer to do Melasti in Goa Sumber Widodaren, Hindu community in Palangkaraya, Central Borneo, center the procession of Melasti in Kahayan harbor. Both communities use water available in Goa Sumber Widodaren and Kahayan Harbor to purify the Pratima – sacred statues which are placed in each temple- and themselves as well on Melasti Day.

In Bali, each community has their own place to do Melasti. Denpasar citizen choose Padanggalak beach; they walk from their temples with Pratima on their heads to reach Padanggalak beach. Some communities in other regions choose rivers or springs as the place to purify those sacred statues.

So if you want to see the procession of Melasti or Makiis but you are not in Bali, follow Melasti procession in these areas.
