Cecimpedan, Balinese Guessing Game

by on Wednesday, 16 March 2011No Comment | 546 views

Video game and on-line game are two names of thousand today’s children games. Almost most of children abandon or never know about traditional games which are usually played by their parents. Balinese children although are crazy about modern games too, in the school they also play traditional games. Cecimpedan is one of them.

On Balinese lesson, elementary students are introduced with Cecimpedan, a guessing game in which a group will mention the clues while another group will try to guess what thing it is. The unique part of Cecimpedan is the students usually assert the questions and the answers by singing them. The convention of Cecimpedan is the askers will mention the metaphor or the clues of the thing they mean within a very short sentence. The long sentence will not match with the melody and moreover ruin the Cecimpedan itself.

Group I           : Jalan jani saling bade cecimpedan (Come on, playing guessing game now) Apa ento tolih-tolih ngejohang? What is the thing that the more you see it the more it goes away?

GroupII : Kuping. Ears. (because none of us can see our own ears except in front of mirror. The ears will move when the head moves. Hence when you move your head to see the ears, they will move away too)

Cecimpedan is played by two groups of children. In a daily life, each of them will use the ordinary metaphors like example above. However in a Cecimpedan competition which is usually held in Bali Art Festival, each group has to prepare their own cecimpedan as many as possible in case other groups use the same metaphor.

Today there are so many Cecimpedan in which the answer is related to a modern thing. Although this is not allowed in a competition, many children create and use it in daily games.

Question          : apake capung makeber ngaba anak liu? What is dragonfly brings many people?

Answer                        : Helicopter.

Although modern games penetrate Bali massively, Cecimpedan has its own place because Balinese children are always introduced with this game in a very early age. Let’s play Cecimpedan!

Question : Apa ke lawat abesik ngenah dini ngenah ditu sibarengan? (What is the shadow which appears here but at the same time appears over there also?)
