Bali SummerSchool Rotterdam 7-14 July 2006 Deadline Extended until June 1. After that date, a 20% late-registration fee will be added! In the intimate surroundings of the brand new World Music and Dance Centre (close to the old harbour and the Euromast) we will welcome dancers and musicians from all over the world: Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, and of course the Netherlands! Don’t miss this unique opportunity to meet them, and immerse yourself in Balinese music and dance, in the world-famous harbour city of Rotterdam.

The Teachers:
• I Wayan Dibia: male dance, masked dances and drama, Jauk Keras, Kecak.
• Ni Ketut Arini Alit: classical and modern Legong, Sisya and Telek.
• I Made Arnawa: gong kebyar, semar pagulingan.
• Ni Ketut Suryatini: gender wayang, angklung.
• Wayne Vitale: modern gong kebyar, composition and gamelan tuning.

Overview of the Program
• Music repertoire: modern gong kebyar composition by Arnawa and Vitale; modern and traditional angklung, Calon-arang repertoire (Telek, Sisya, Jauk) on semar pagulingan.
• Music study:drum workshops by Arnawa, gender wayang by Suryatini, vocal study, suling, ugal, gangsa, reyong technique.
• Dance repertoire: masked dances (topeng pajegan) by Dibia, legong Supraba Duta, a modern legong variant by Arini, Calon-arang repertoire: Telek, Sisya, Jauk.
• Dance study: male and female technique based on traditional repertoire, as a daily warm up.

Workshop Gamelan Tuning and Restoration:
The gamelan tuning workshop by Wayne Vitale will take place from 28 June till 7 July. Participants can enroll for any 3 days within this period.

• Music study: Personal choice
Kendang (drum); Arnawa; repertoire and technique
Trompong, ugal, gangsa; Vitale; technique
Gender wayang ; vocal study ; Suryatini ; repertoire and technique
• Dance repertoire I
Masked dance ; A choice of masked dance ; Dibia ; technique and repertoire
Legong Supraba Duta: modern legong choreography; Arini; technique and repertoire.13:00-14:00: Lunch

14:00-15:30:
Calonarang music and dance rehearsal; Study of the final presentation; led by Dibia
Including all Calonarang repertoire and Cak.

15:30-15:45: Tea break

15:45-17:30:
• Music Repertoire II: Calonarang
Telek/Jauk/Sisya: all music teachers; Semar Pagulingan
• Dance repertoire II: Calonarang
Telek: male/female masked; Dibia and Arini
Jauk : male mask dance: Dibia
Sisya: femal dance, Arini

18:00-20:00: Dinner

20:00-22:00: Infotainment Program

• Unique historical films on Balinese life and culture, from the collection of the Dutch Filmmuseum and the KITLV.
• Lectures/demontrations by all teachers, and some international guests
• Kecak night; a summer evening workshop for all participants
• Rotterdam by night; a Rotterdam city and harbour tour
• African music and dance workshop in cooperation with the Africa Summerschool
• Concert; a Balinese music and dance evening full of surprises
• Final presentation; festive conclusion of the Bali Summerschool
