Semar Pegulingan Course in London
SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, U. of London) and three partners are once again offering around two dozen short summer courses in the performance of a variety of “world musics”.
The SOAS offerings are, for budgetary reasons, mostly taught by experienced and talented UK-based teachers, with some courses bringing specialists from abroad. This year’s offerings include one of obvious interest to our list:
Balinese gamelan Semar Pegulingan
July 31 - Aug 5; Mon-Fri 7-9pm & Sat 11-5pm
Learn to play a traditional piece for the sweet-sounding seven-tone Balinese semar pegulingan saih pitu, on this beautiful set of instruments based at SOAS.
Students will be encouraged to play all of the instruments in the ensemble and will learn a traditional piece of Balinese music. Beginners welcome; numbers are limited.
Course Leader: Andy Channing is founder and artistic director of the Lila Cita gamelan gong kebyar group. He has studied gamelan in Bali and at STSI (Indonesian Academy of Performing Arts) in Solo, Java. Since 1991 he has taught and performed Balinese and Javanese gamelan throughout the UK, including at SOAS.
