Traffic Accident Management a la Balinese

Traffic accident for Balinese is not just an event that needs emergency action physically such as immediate first aid, swift ambulance, road-side assistance, etc, but also spiritually. A series of spiritual-related action have to be taken when an accident happen to ensure the safety of the victims especially when blood are spilled in the accident.

Balinese believe that if witches or evil spirits get someone blood, they can do a great harm to that person, so when there is a traffic accident occurs and the blood of the victims have spilled on the spot of the accident, the family members of the victims will guard that place 24/7.

They usually erect a small tent from bamboo poles covered with a net or in some areas in Bali they make a bonfire on the spot of the accident. Sometimes they block a quarter of the street to secure the area of the accident and keep that area under vigilant guard for three days in a row or until a ceremony to negate the effect of the negative effect of the spilled blood to the victims.

In some areas in Bali, people believe that a part of the soul is separated form the body when we are having an accident and stay in the spot of the accident. So the same measurements as for the spilled blood have to be taken to protect the part of the soul from falling into the hand of witches or evil spirits since it will be a great hindrance to the healing process of the victim. the guard is kept on the spot of the accident until a proper ceremony is held on that place to bring back the part of the soul to its rightful owner.
