Ngusaba Dalem: To Make A Better Place To Live

by on Tuesday, 9 August 2011One Comment | 637 views

Some people who really care about the safety and comfort in using computer will upgrade, defrag, and clean it from viruses regularly. For Balinese, earth is just the same with a computer. For that reason, Serongga Village, a little village with 4 Banjar in Gianyar, hold the utmost cleaning ceremony to get a better place to live.

After holding Ngusaba in Pura Desa and Pura Puseh 3 years ago, now Serongga villagers are holding Ngusaba Dalem at Pura Dalem. This utmost cleaning ceremony has been taking place from May to September 24th. But the core of ceremony will be held in August 13th. Before that date, Serongga villagers are so sincere to work altogether to hold series of ceremony. In each ceremony, the shows presented to the gods are performed just like Rejang Dance, Baris Gede Dance, and Topeng Dance.

Those three special shows were also performed at Lebih beach in August 6th, just a minute after sacred stuffs arranged. On that day, people did Melasti (walking to the beach while carrying the sacred stuffs on their head. It is aimed to purify them) and presented offerings by releasing cows in the ocean, pigs, little chicks, and others. People believe that the cow will not die there in the ocean; the waves will drag it to the land and people in somewhere will get it.

On the next day, August 7th, there was a ceremony called Melaspas Bagia Pulekerti. Pulekerti is the symbol of earth products in 3D-mountain shape where there is a golden ball on the top. At least there are 5 couples of Pulakerti which were brought from Pura Desa to Pura Dalem. And in August 13th after all the core ceremonies are accomplished, people will struggle to grab the golden balls. So if you think you will be in Bali on that date, visit Serongga Village and you will see the utmost sacred but festive event.

Beyond that, the thing that may surprise you is the cost of Ngusaba Dalem. Around 1,5 Billion rupiahs are needed to hold this purifying ceremony. The outsider may think this is a waste of money or the cost could be lesser than it. Serongga Village though admitted that the amount they should spend is so big; they will try to give the best for this ceremony. Making a better place to live is the main reason why Serongga community thinks the cost and times are worth it.
