An episode from the Uttarakanda, the next that precedes the main Ramayana story . In the Uttarakanda there are many stories both of the main protagonist of the Ramayana, but also of their earlier incarnations and ancestors. In this story Rawana is already emerging as a demon of great power . As a challenge to demonstrate his power, he competes with the gods, and claims that he can overturn Siwa’s throne on Mount Kailasa, which he is shown doing in this story . In the continuation of the story, not shown in this painting Rama’s ancestor Arjuna Sahasrabahu (not the same as the hero Arjuna) fight Rawana and imprisons him.
