A Glimpse from the Royal Cremation of Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik

On Friday, April 11, 2008, the cremation ceremony of Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik and two other members of Karangasem royal family was held in the cemetery near the royal palace of Karangasem. This cremation ceremony involved hundreds of people, the royal family of Karangasem, friends of Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik and family, and the members of the hamlets around the royal palace of Karangasem. The preparation for the procession to the cemetery had been commenced from early in the morning. The cremation towers and winged-lion –shaped sarcophaguses had been stationed in front of the palace waiting for the procession to start.

Dr. Anak Agung MAde JelantikThe procession started around 1 PM, dozens of people carried the cremation towers and the sarcophaguses, while the royal family of Karangasem paraded in front of the sarcophaguses leading the procession to the cemetery. The precession was accompanied by the Balaganjur orchestra with its dynamic melodies gave more spirit and power to the bearers of cremation towers and sarcophaguses.

The stars of this cremation procession were sons of the deceased who rode the winged-lion –shaped sarcophaguses. The son Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik, Ir. Anak Agung Gede Dharma Widoere Djelantik who rode his father sarcophagus gave his best effort to stay calm on the rocking sarcophagus (the bearers of Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik’s sarcophagus were mainly teenagers and their spirits were easily pumped up by the dynamic melodies of Balaganjur orchestra producing wild movement of the sarcopahugus.

The procession arrived on the cemetery around 3 PM, and thepreparation for the cremation ceremony took about an hour. The burning of the sarcophaguses started on 4 PM. The family members and friends gave their last salutes to the deceased as the fire consumed the sarcophaguses and the bodies of the deceased in it.
