A Glimpse on Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik’s Life

Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik was born on July 21st 1919 in Karangasem Regency, Bali. His father was Anak Agung Bagus Djelantik, Stedehouder von Karangasem and was dubbed A.A. Anglurah Ketut Karangasem in 1939. His mother was known as Mekele Sela, both had passed away. His beloved wife was Astri Henriete Zwart, passed away in 1997. He had five children: Dr Ayu Bulantrisna Djelantik-Soejoto (Bandung-Wichita Falls TX US); A.A. Ayu Suryawati Djelantik (Denpasar); A.A. Ayu Madelief Futri Djelantik-Hobohm (Wina, Austria); A.A.G. Dharma Widoere Djelantik (Gouda-Holland); Merti Hope Djelantik-Rittgers (Tolland, CI US) with 13 granchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Dr. Djelantik’s academic pursuit was began in 1925, when he enrolled for Hollands Inlandsche School in Denpasar, then in 1932 he studied in MULO School di Malang, East Java. He continued his study in Algemene Middelbare School in Jogyakarta, in 1935 then enrolled in Medical Faculty in Amsterdam University in 1938 and achieved his doctoral degree in in 1946 Ijazah Dokter di Amsterdam.


The impressive list of Dr. Jelantik working experiences can be summed up as follow
1948 – 1950 Government’s Medical Force in Namlea, Buru Island.
1950 – 1954 Government’s Medical Force Bolaang Mongondow
1954 _ 1958 Government’s Medical Force di Buleleng, Bali
1958 _ 1968 Head of Health Department for Bali and head of Sanglah Central Hospital
1962 _ 1965 Lecturer in medical faculty, Udayana University
1966 _ 1968 Lecturer in ASTI Denpasar
1968 _ 1980 Work as an expert in Malariologist for W.H.O in Iraq (1968- 1970), Somalia (1970 – 1975) and Afghanistan (1975 – 1980).
1980 Retired, back to Indonesia.
1980 – 1999 Continued to lecture in ASTI
Des.1999 Retired because of illness


Dr. Djelantik social and cultural activeties is as impresive as his working experiences. In the realm of Art he was an active member and president of Walter Spies Foundation. He also published a book on painting entitled “Balinese Paintings” (Oxford Univ. Press 1966), “ESTHETIKA” (1998), and a drawing book with collection of water color painting entitled “Against All Odds”. He also held single water color painting exhibition entitled “Post-Coma Reflections” in Popo Danes Art Veranda in June 2005. In education he was active member of Cipta Dharma Foundation in Denpasar. He published his autobiography “THE BIRTHMARK” in 1997.


He was decorated with Dharma Kusuma Award in art by the goverment of Bali in July 1993, an Award on dedication in art from the Ministry of Education and Culture in June 1993, Internasional “Quest for Global Healing” Award from Global Healing Conference in Ubud, in December 2004, and the highest award for dedication in art and culture, “Bintang Budaya Pramana” from Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in August 2006.

Dr. Djelantik’s CV and photographs are provided by his beloved daughter Dr. Ayu Bulantrisna Djelantik-Soejoto.
