Protecting House Compound: Amulet

by on Monday, 23 April 2007One Comment | 8,180 views

For some Balinese house compound protection that is provided by walls, gate, and guardian spirit shrines are not enough. All these means of protection are useless against determine thieves, robbers or advanced level magical attack. These kind of disturbances create an urgent need in Balinese’s mind for a stronger mean of house compound protection at least a tool that can cover the weakness of walls, gate and guardian spirit shrines.

The best solution for this problem in Balinese culture is a house compound amulet. The amulet for house compound protection can be divided into two divisions: Tetaneman or Pependeman and Pepasangan.

The former, tetaneman or pependeman is a house compound amulet that is buried in the center of house compound, under the house structure, in every corner of the house (especially in southwest corner since this corner is considered the weakest place in the house compound), under the gate or under the entranceway. the word tetaneman and pependeman are derived from the word “tanem” and “pendem” which both means “to bury.” The tetaneman is usually made of metal plate, brick or part of broken clay pot that is used in cremation ceremony, with inscription of bizarre image demon or god and sacred characters on the surface of it.

The latter, pepasangan is a house compound image that is attached or hung on the house structure. The word pepasangan is derived from the word “pasang” which means “hang,” “attach,” or “install.” The pepasangan usually made of a piece of square white cloth with inscription of sacred images and characters.

Both of these amulet can be obtained from a balian (witch doctor) or peranda (high priest), but mostly from the balian. A special offering, banten pasupati (pasupati offering) is needed by the balian or peranda to make a house compound amulet. The special offering is needed to bring amulet to life and invest it with magical power. The making of the amulet is carried out in an auspicious day, preferably Kajeng Kliwon (occurs every 15 day) when the power of magic reach its peak.

The effect of the house compound amulet is varied from one to another. There is an amulet that makes a thief does not find a way to enter the house compound, another amulet may allow the thief to enter but once inside the house compound he does not know what to do, how to get out, or which way to go out. But mostly house compound amulets invest a great fear in the heart of the thief so he will not dare to enter the house compound.
