Balinese are Always Lucky
Yesterday I realized an interesting fact about Balinese. We, Balinese are always lucky, precisely; we always think that we are lucky. How can it be? Ok I will begin with a trivial example, yesterday my distant cousin had an accident, he had a few bruise, but the motorcycle had “beyond repair” kind of damage. His mother with watery eyes said that she is lucky that her son is ok.
For motor cycle? “It is no big deal” she said. If you can’t spot anything unusual in that story, you should read this. Three month ago my friend had a traffic accident, both her leg was broken, her head and arm badly injured, she pass away in the hospital two days later. Her uncle consolation words to the family were: she was lucky, it was better than she live with impaired body for the rest of her life. Find something unusual? Wait a moment, here is another story, a year ago my mother fell form the tree, both of her legs were badly broken, her head and one of her eyes were badly injured, she survives, but she lost the sight of one of her eyes, and she can not walk properly, she uses a walking stick. My family thinks (until now) that she is lucky and we are lucky. “We are lucky, mom alive”, said my sister. To Balinese, misery is inevitable; since life is a cycle of fortune and misery. So we try to take it as lightly as possible. What ever kind of misery fall upon the Balinese, we will remain strong, or at least trying to remain so, because we always think that we are lucky.
