Rai Bangsawan: Left Comfort Zone To be an Organic Farmer

by on Tuesday, 21 June 2011No Comment | 236 views

His deep condolence toward the agricultural condition in Bali provoked him to prove that Bali can fulfill a big demand of agricultural products without a need to import. This young man’s desire to improve and to make the organic farming popular led him to switch over his position from a reputable consultant which made 7000 USD per month to an organic farmer. The young man, Rai Bangsawan received many scorns but his persistent efforts and sacrifice result in big things.

15 years ago Rai Bangsawan was so sad knowing that some agricultural products which according to him can be able to be planted in Bali were imported from unfertile province.  He resigned and rented 30 acre farmland in Canggu area. This big step for sure was considered as a fool for other people. Those scorns were ignored and he just focused to realize his big idea. Then he started to plant water spinach and run his farm with good managerial system.

He divided 30-acre farmland to be 30 plots. Every single day 1 plot was planted with water spinach. Until day 25 he was out harvesting the water spinach and sold them to the traditional market. One plot of water spinach could give him 1 million rupiah and that means in a month he collected 25 million rupiah (30 million minus 5 million for rental fee). That was surprisingly good. Because no pesticide or other chemical fertilizer were used, Rai Bangsawan admitted that organic farming make more money since you don’t need spending money to buy fertilizer and for that reason organic products’ price should be lower.

After gaining success in planting water spinach within 10 years, Rai Bangsawan with some farmers in Tamblingan Village, northern area of Bali, plant organic coffee. His product named Bali Exotic Beans has received an International certification from 4C Association from Germany and his organic coffee has been exported to various countries in Europe and Australia.

His big effort to revive organic farming received big denial from the hoodlums working for fertilizer company in the beginning years. Yet he just moved on until he gains a success. Rai Bangsawan has also a dream to ‘wake up’ all people to stop moving to urban area and focus on what they have in their hometown.
