Balinese Student Outside Bali
Many Balinese students after they graduate from Senior High school go outside Bali to continue their study instead of studying in Bali. As a result from Bali has only one state university and it has only limited majors to choose. They usually go to the west, to the big cities in Java, which serve many better and famous colleges and more majors to choose. They got better study, and yet how about their religious and cultural activities that they always did in Bali?
Actually, there, outside of Bali, are Pura (hindus’s temple) moreover there is Banjar (the smallest society organization in Bali) like in Surabaya. I Made Kris Adi Astra, one of Balinese who is studying in Jakarta complained about there is no Pura in his campus. He must ride a motorbike to reach pura Amerta Sari in bintaro. “But I prefer praying in my room. If my mood is good I will go to Pura in Cinere” he added.
Differ from Kris’s condition. Balinese students in IPDN (Educational institution which is equivalent to University, aimed to turn out aspiring civil servants) have their own Pura. Every single day at about 7 pm they walk together on foot to reach their Pura. Their Pura is not really far. It stands in higher place and is in vicinity IPDN campus. They never place offerings in the temple daily, just on Hindu`s holidays like Galungan.. They only pray using flowers without any flower offerings (canang), as they usually use in Bali. In addition, there is also a priest (pemangku), who leads the ceremony. From the pemangku they usually buy canang when Galungan, Kuningan, and Nyepi come. Only for those days they use canang because outside Bali canang is more expensive. Those canang are used as an offering or praying.
On the holidays and other ceremony the students usually hold a feast. The canang and other offering is made by the girls. While the girls are making canang and banten (Balinese offering) the boys are making Penjor, mebat (making Balinese traditional dishes), or making roasted suckling pig. After their works are finished they will have meal together in their Pura. They also keep their Pura clean. Sunday morning is the time for them to clean the Pura together.
If there is no activity in their campus or any ceremony they spent their time together to play football. There are many more activities for Balinese students at there. Others are on the next posting!
