The Royal Cremation Ceremony of Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik

A.A Made Djelantik
On Friday, April 11th 2008, the royal cremation ceremony of the late Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik will be held at the royal palace of Karangasem, rescheduled from the initial plan in which the cremation ceremony will be held in August 2008. Dr Anak Agung Made Djelantik passed away on the eve of Sept. 5, 2007 and had been cremated with modest kingsan ring geni (bequeathal to fire) ceremony without the actual cremation ceremony.

Dr Anak Agung Made Djelantik was son of the last king of Karangasem, founder of Walter Spies Foundation with immense contribution to the art and culture of Bali such as founding Listibya (an agency for cultural preservation in Bali). He also arranged many spectacular festivals to continue Spies’ work to foster emerging artists. Outside the art and culture circle, Dr Anak Agung Made Djelantik was renowned as a doctor who had worked for many years with the World Health Organization to combat Malaria in Africa, the Middle East and throughout Indonesia. He was the first Balinese Director of Sanglah General Hospital in Denpasar.

He was decorated with Dharma Kusuma Award in art by the goverment of Bali in July 1993, an Award on dedication in art from the Ministry of Education and Culture in June 1993, Internasional “Quest for Global Healing” Award from Global Healing Conference in Ubud, in December 2004, and the highest award for dedication in art and culture, “Bintang Budaya Pramana” from Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in August 2006. To sum it all Rucina Ballinger, the co-author of Balinese Dance, Drama And Music: A Guide to the Performing Arts of Bali described Dr. Anak Agung.Made Djelantik as a “Renaissance man supreme, doctor of dharma, aesthetician, and one of most decent human beings I have ever met.”
