Rp 400 Million For Rats’ Burning Procession

by on Saturday, 19 March 2011No Comment | 326 views

Rats are the most harmful pest on farms in Tabanan and Badung regency. It is very often, the farmers together with the villagers destroy the rats, as that is a suggested way to keep the plants. Yet, in Bali, the extermination of the rats is followed by the ceremonial procession of Ngaben (burning the dead body), just like human do.

After holding Mretek Mrana –the burning procession of rats- in 1942, 1968, and 2001, 204 Pekaseh Subak (the leader of Balinese irrigation system named Subak) decided to hold Mretek Mrana for the fourth time in March 12 th 2011 at Seseh Beach, Cemagi, Badung Regency. As the same as ordinary Ngaben procession, the villagers also carried rats’ Bade (a tower looks like home in which there is a coffin inside)on their shoulder.

According to The Chairman of Pekaseh Forum, Nyoman Renda, Mretek Mrana is aimed to equalize Sekala and Niskala (the visible and invisible world) so that the rats will not go back to destroy the plants. Renda revealed that this ceremony which was attended by all Pekaseh, Badung Regent, Agricultural Bureau Chief, and several Badung officials, spent Rp 400 million. This big money for rats’ burning procession was funded by contribution of all Pekaseh and Badung Government as well.  Renda wished that Mretek Mrana could be held regularly once in a decade.

Many people outside Bali perhaps think that this rats’ burning procession is nonsense but Badung Regent, A.A Gde Agung declined it. He asserted that this ceremony is mentioned on Rats Ngaben Literature. Copying the writings on that literature, Gde Agung said that all creatures including pests should be respected though it causes damage.

Obviously, the extermination of rats couldn’t be done only by holding burning procession. Hence, Agricultural Bureau promised to follow the procedure in destroying the pests so that the farmers could have good crops in every year. This of course will make farmers to be more prosperous
