Serangan Island: The Island of Charm and Hope
The Charm of Serangan Island – Serangan Island Green Festival
Serangan Island, 13–15 November 2009
Serangan Island, on Bali’s south coast, has a diverse environment, society, culture and tourism which for many years has added value to the tourism constellation of the Denpasar, Sanur, Benoa and Nusa Dua area.
Even though Serangan has experienced a physical transformation – a land expansion by way of reclamation – the island is still preserved as a icon blessed with an atmosphere of marine beauty and spiritual grandeur; a definitive “Golden Island” (a land that is covered with sparkling golden sand), ever intoxicating and captivating its visitors with love, harmony and memories – a state of mind that the local people refer to as sira angen, believed to be the origin of the word Serangan, meaning “Those who see will be enchanted”.
Moving beyond the controversy suffered by this region, Serangan is silent no more; on the contrary it is proactive in reforming and implementing a multi-dimensional community development concept known as 3E (Ecology, Education and Economy). This refers to Serangan Island’s identity as a region with great potential that is teeming with aspirations; that with its current connection with mainland Bali is increasingly becoming representative of the government’s policy towards environmental conservation; historic and cultural values; the importance of education; and of attractive and sustainable cultural tourism.
With 3E the positive image comes alive, influencing the present branding of Serangan that exposes the island as a region that has succeeded in blending a marine atmosphere, spirituality and a culture with a creative vibe of multiculturalism, community spirit, and sustainable, environmentally friendly activities. This is why the branding of the Charming Serangan Island event, which was the collaborative brainchild of the local people and the Denpasar Government, has been used as a device to put Serangan Island on the map for future development. This event will be a celebration with more of an ecological and educational atmosphere, and also be referred to as Serangan Island Green Festival.
The origin of the latest branding of Serangan is aimed at the activities and dynamics of the island centered on Sakenan Temple; a spiritual legacy that is an integral part of the identity of the island. As a spiritual hub, this temple and other religious sites represent a magnificent foundation for the revitalization of Serangan.
In this ecological context, the latest branding of Serangan leads directly to the wealth and panoramic beauty of the marine life with its mangroves. Related activities include the Release of Juvenile and Green Turtles, the Coral Adoption Program, Mangrove Planting, as well as Serangan Environmental and Marine Tours; which if associated with the educational aspect (environmental conservation) will then be expressed as creative performances of traditional or popular Serangan style art-forms, Student Green Camp facilities, outdoor recreation activities, and the Center for Traditional Marine Technology including traditional jukung outriggers and all other fishing methods. Even the natural environment of Serangan has become a place of exploration for a range of adventure activities and hobbies such as photography, model aircraft flying, fishing, cycling and trekking.
Now for all of these things there is easy access from mainland Bali to Serangan Island, making Serangan an ecotourism spot that emphasizes the adventurous aspect of a seaside marine community that is both unique and captivating.
With such branding, Serangan will become a part of contemporary Bali that is loved by all, with its own undeniable charm and aspirations.
