Tradition and Innovation in Southeast Asian Performance
Southeast Asian cultures have a rich variety of performance genres. Some performances are closely linked to religious practice while others are secular, even commercial. This roundtable will discuss what impact technology, tourism, economic development, and globalization has had upon Southeast Asian performance. Topics that could be addressed include: What is the balance between innovation and tradition? Has institutionalized arts training altered and/or enhanced performances? Have audience expectations changed? Has the role of the performer changed? Is performance used as a political tool, and if so, in what ways? If someone is expert in two or more regions of Southeast Asia, he or she might compare and contrast the regional differences and/or similarities that exist.
