Types of Balinese Temples

Thousands of temples that scattered all over the island of Bali are not just built for a single purpose. The function of a temple can be determined by the characteristics of the temple that totally depend on the bond that bind the temple congregations to the temple. The bond may be a social, political, economical, or genealogical bond.

The social bond can be in the form of territorial bond, and teacher – student bond. The political bond is created base on the need of the king to unite his people and territory. The economical bond is created based on the similarity of the profession, for example farmer, trader, fisherman, etc. Genealogical bond is established based on kinship or clan.

Serangan Island

Serangan, a small island lies just off Bali southern coast near Sanur, connected to the main island with a dusty bridge-road. Serangan has an area of only 180 acres and a population abut 6000, and famously known principally for its important Sakenan Temple.

Serangan is a dry island, too dry for wet farming but its residents grow corn, maize, peanuts and beans. Some islanders earn living by making shell trinkets to sell to the tourist, working in the fishing company and civil servants.

Serangan Island - Serangan is a small island that lies off the Balinese coastline just south of Sanur and has long played an important role in local religious history. Despite its size, there are actually four temple compounds found on the island and Pura Sakenan is considered one of the holiest sites of worship for Balinese Hindus.
