Nusa Ceningan’s Sunset

Saturday, March 29th, 2008 by ablteam

nusa ceningan

Ceningan is the smallest island of Nusa Islands – comprises of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. Situated between the Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, 20 km from Bali’s south-east coast, Nusa Ceningan can be reached by boat from Sanur or through a bridge which connects Nusa lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

Nusa Ceningan offers many tourist attractions such as swallow cave, historical temples that are famous with their cockfighting, the unique seaweed farming and white sand beaches with superb waves for surfing. However one thing that most travel brochure left out when promoting Nusa Ceningan is its magnificent sunset. The photo above will tell you more than my explaination.

Chinese Legacies in Bali Part 2

Wednesday, February 13th, 2008 by Rina-Editor

As a result, from Chinese immigration to Bali there are some numbers of assimilation products (for the former explanation see on the previous posting). “Uang kepeng” or Chinese coin and ceramics have been discussed in previous article; the others product of the assimilation between Chinese and Balinese culture are Chinese Baris Dance and Pelinggih Ratu Subandar.

Baris Cina / Chinese Baris dance.

One of famous Balinese dance is Baris or warrior dance. There are many kinds of Baris and Chinese Baris is one of them. This dance appeared for the first time in Semawang and Blanjong (Sanur) and it still exists there until now. Semawang and Blanjong were known as harbor where Chinese and other traders hang down.

Serangan is a small island that lies off the Balinese coastline just south of Sanur and has long played an important role in local religious history. Despite its size, there are actually four temple compounds found on the island and Pura Sakenan is considered one of the holiest sites of worship for Balinese Hindu’s.

Nusa Penida and the Kingdom of Dalem Peed

The historical scenery of Bali unfold from a third perspective as well: Nusa Penida, especially the region of Dalem Peed, which had (and still has) numerous connections with the southern coast of Bali. These connections are found on various levels, as well as in regard to time. But these levels cannot be clearly separated, since over the years they have become blended in the oral traditions.

Nusa Penida lies off the coast of south Bali. Its steep cliffs and mountainous countryside, with its highest elevation, the Gunung Mundi (529 m), are clearly visible. Even though the island seems within reach, it is difficult to get to because the ocean current is particularly strong, and depending on the season, it turns the crossing into quite a dangerous adventure. The Balinese reluctantly set out on this journey, and during the rainy season, when the waves are particularly high, they forego it completely.

Bazaar a la Balinese

Monday, December 3rd, 2007 by Kunta Yuni

As far as we know, in general bazaar is done by selling goods, foods, or sometimes items made by hand. It is normally sold with low price to attract people. Based on the Oxford Dictionary the definition of the word “bazaar” is a sale of goods, often items made by hand, to raise money for a charity or for people who need help. But there is a unique characteristic in bazaar a la Balinese. Before going further I’d like to share my friend’s experience about this kind of bazaar.

He is a Balinese but he was born and grew up in Jakarta. He came back to his home town to study in university. One day his uncle told him that there was bazaar in his banjar (ward) and he was so excited for that. When he got there he was surprised. Do you know why? Well, all the prices are twice more expensive than the normal ones. He was startled because in his thought he is going to buy food or goods in low price like in Jakarta.

In the era of 70s in Sanur, bazaar was held in Galungan only (Christmas a la Balinese ) by the member of the banjar ( hamlet / ward ) in order to give its community a chance to spend their money for snacks since all food stalls were closed during that day. And not all food, drinks or goods were sold in high price; only liquors such as beer, tuak, or arak (Balinese wine) were sold in inflated price to generate some profits and then the profit would be used to repair the banjar or temple on that area. But with the passing of the time there is a different concept arises in carrying out the bazaar.
