Seminyak Friday Market

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008 by admin

We are proud to present the new Seminyak Friday Market, taking place every Friday from 9 am to 2 pm in a convivial courtyard setting right in the heart of Semiyak (parking space will also be provided). This event is run and self-managed by a co-operative of more than twenty local, small and independent growers and businesses and was conceived as a way of promoting natural, organic and fair-trade products, for a brighter future in this so beloved island of Bali.

The Seminyak Friday Market provides the opportunity of finding healthier and tastier products within your reach; not only does their local provenience ensure their freshness whilst working with small independent businesses, but it also creates the grounds for finally making ‘natural and organic’ a concrete and affordable choice.

The Seminyak Friday Market offers a wide range of both fresh and dry foods from fruit and vegetables to honey, wine, tea, bread and pastries made from top quality ingredients with a particular attention for both the customers’ and the farmers’ personal fulfilment and satisfaction. This event also gives you the chance to experience first-hand the real difference brought by ‘Seminyak Friday Market’ in other products than edible goods; these include cosmetics, alternative medicinal remedies, spa and body care products, and even children and adult clothing made from natural dyes and cotton.

The royal cremation of the Ubud royal family head Tjokorda Gde Agung Suyasa, who died in March after a long illness, and lesser royal Tjokorda Gde Raka who also died in March, which is held today, is surely one of the biggest royal cremation ceremonies in the history of Bali. Apart from the gigantic cremation towers, the prima ballerina of this royal cremation is none other then the Naga Banda, a seven-metre long ‘dragon’, made of tons of bamboo and wood, decorated with brilliant accessories.

Naga Banda

To shed a better light on Naga Banda, here is a short story on the origin of Naga banda and why it is used in a royal cremation.

King Waturenggong, the king of Bali, held a grand ceremony in the capital city of his kingdom, Gelgel. One of the requirements of the ceremony is that a high priest of Buda sect has to officiate the ceremony along with the high priest of Siwa sect; so Danghyang Astapaka, a high priest of Buda sect which also brother of royal priest Danghyang Nirartha was summoned form East Java to officiate the ceremony.

Amandari, Ubud, Bali

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 by admin

Amandari is an upcountry retreat perched on an escarpment high above the winding Ayung River gorge in Ubud - Bali. Amandari lies adjacent to the village of Kedewatan and close by Ubud, Bali’s vibrant art community. The resort has been designed as a walled Balinese village, with river-stone walkways linking to the 30 thatched-roof pavilions.
Amandari reflects the upcountry village culture of art and music and dance and design that surrounds it. It is this inspired integration of the resort with the Balinese world about it that makes Amandari a memorable experience.
