Balinese Student Outside Bali Part 2
IPDN’s (Educational institution which is equivalent to University, aimed to turn out aspiring internal governments) students come from all of provinces in Indonesia including Bali. Balinese students who are studying in IPDN always do their duties as Balinese and as Hindus though they are in west Java for about 10 months in a year. They pray in Pura (hindu’s temple) which was constructed by the government and that pura is in vicinity of IPDN campus area.
Every year, the youngest class, in this institution, which from many regions in Indonesia, shows their own traditional art performance, including Balinese? “Last year, we showed dance. The girls were dancing while the boys accompanied by playing gambelan (Balinese music instrument),” said I Putu Riska Desthara, IPDN second year student. He said that Balinese shows always anticipated by others students. “Moreover, Balinese ever showed Calonarang but as not sacred as the original one,” he added.
They, Balinese students, spend 20.000 rupiah per month (it is not high fee because they get salary for studying there) to pay all needs in terms of celebrating Hindus ceremony and improving their asbility in mastering Balinese art. They use that money for example to buy canang (flower offering), others stuff to make banten (offering) and of course to make ogoh-ogoh (giant puppet for Balinese New Year eve.
The main stuffs to make banten are semat (tiny bamboo to merge coconut leave to the others) and coconut leaves. The girls usually buy the coconut leave at there, yet semat is only available in Bali. How? Each person, boys and girls ought to bring a bundle of semat when they are given time to go back home.
Recently Balinese youngsters in Bali are busy to create ogoh-ogoh in celebrating Nyepi, so do Balinese students in IPDN. Formerly, they decided not to create ogoh-ogoh because in the meantime they have to create ogoh-ogoh there is another presidency program that must be followed. They were so pessimistic. However they change their decision. “Yeah, we want to celebrate Nyepi as usual,” declared Desthara via phone.
