A Balinese Folktale: Clever Goat
Once upon a time, there were a goat named Ni Mesaba and her daughter, Ni Wiwingsati, lived deep inside a forest on the slope of Mount Agung. They fed on the leaves that were available in plenty in the forest. One day, in search for better leaves, Ni Wiwingsati strayed too far from her mother; but not for so long; she came to her mother, scared to death because she was chased by the tiger.
Upon seeing this circumstance Ni Mesaba contrived a trick to fool the tiger. She stood in front of her daughter, brandished her horns. Seeing this act, the tiger threathned the goats, “you insolent animals, how dare you enter my kingdom, trespassers like you will end up no where else but inside my belly”. Hearing these words, Ni Mesaba leaped forward and shouted, “What did you say? Do you want to eat me? No, I am the one, who will eat you, have you heard the mighty Ni Mesaba? I am Ni Mesaba, the one who received unlimited magical power from the god of the forest; I can easily kill all animals in this forest. Come closer you fool; I will rip your belly with my horns”. Ni Mesaba approached the tiger with lowered horns. The tiger retreated, and he ran away when I Mesaba charged him.
