The Great Ceremony in Taman Ayun Temple

The great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony in Pura Taman Ayun reached its peak yesterday (12/19/2006). The ceremony began on 10/21/2006 and last until 12/30/2006. This great ceremony comprised of a series of intricate ceremonies.

The first ceremony was Matur Piuning (informing the God), this ceremony was dedicated to informing the god that the great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony will be held soon this ceremony was held on 10/21/2006. Then Nunas Pengalang Sasih (begging a clear month) ceremony was held on 10/27/2006, this ceremony was dedicated to ask for good weather to the God. After that the Nyukat Genah (purifying the venue) ceremony was held on 11/20/2006. This ceremony was dedicated to purify the venue where the great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony were held.

The venue for this kind of ceremony is called Karang Suci (The Holy Area), the place for this Karang Suci is carefully measured and purified by the Pedanda (high priest) and all holy structures which are used for the great ceremony are erected inside the Karang Suci. Then the Nyukat Genah ceremony was followed by the melaspas (giving a life to the structure) and mendem pedagingan (burying the treasure) ceremony. These ceremonies were held on 12/13/2006, these ceremonies were dedicated to purify and to give spiritual power to the holy structures which were used for the great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony. Then Mepepada ceremony was held on 12/14/2006, to purify the animals which were used for this great ceremony.

On 12/15/2006 the Tawur Panca Walikrama ceremony was held. This ceremony was performed to purify the world on certain level. This purifying ceremony comprised of Melasti and mapekelem ceremony. Melasti ceremony is dedicated to purify the human and the nature by means of getting holy water from the sea. While mapekelem ceremony is dedicated to restore the balance of positive and negative force in which scores of sacrificial animals are drowned at sea as an offering to the spirits of the sea. The peaks of the ceremony were the Piodalan and Ngenteg Linggih ceremony were held on 12/19/2006. The Piodalan ceremony was held to celebrate the anniversary of temple.

On the day of its anniversary the Taman Ayun temple was richly decorated and many gigantic offerings were set. While the Ngenteg Linggih ceremony was held to ensure the stability of the spiritual power of the temple. The last ceremony of the great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan series of ceremonies is the Masineb ceremony, this ceremony will be held on 12/30/2006. This ceremony is a farewell ceremony to the God, since on this day He will ascent to His respective abode.

The great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony is rare series of ceremonies, it is held every 30 years in order to restore the spiritual power of the temple. According to the ancient Gama Dewa scripture, the spiritual power of a temple will last for 30 years, and after 30 years the great mamungkah and mupuk pedagingan ceremony must be held to restore the spiritual power of the temple.
