Unclean Spiritually = A Prohibition to Pray?

by on Tuesday, 28 October 2008No Comment | 891 views

“Cuntaka” is a terminology that creates a wide variety of responds among the Balinese. Cuntaka is the time when Balinese are considered unclean spiritually so they are not allowed to go to Pura (Hindu’s temple) or other holy places. So, does it means that if Balinese get Cuntaka equals Balinese are forbidden to pray?

Unclean Spiritually

Cuntaka derives from story which is taken from Indrajaya Lontar. Once upon a time, Indra, the king of heaven, sensed that someone had done something bad to heaven by the vibrating strong evil vibration that reach heaven. Indra searched high and low to find the “culprit” and finally he found him and killed him. Alas, he was wrong. The suspected “culprit” actually was a hermit whom his good vibration reached heaven. Then Indra felt sorry and then left heaven to go to somewhere. After a long time he would not come back because he thought that he had a lot of sin to be paid. One day, because of heaven needed someone to rule it, and then other gods asked Indra to come back. But Indra rejected it since he considered his sin was too much. In order to take Indra back to the heaven, other gods had transferred Indra’s sins to human and several fruits. They diverted his sin to women who have their period, several fruits, and people who have physical disability since they were born.

People mentioned above are banned to enter to Pura or other holy place for few days or as long as they live for those with physical disability since they were born. And they are also forbidden to offer the offerings to the gods. Since, these people are considered in unbalanced state, so they spread bad vibration to the surrounding and as consequences people around them will receive a bad vibration. This is not good, for that bad vibration will inhibit people who have purified their self spiritually to worship God.

When people are prohibited to go to Pura then apparently they will not pray. However Balinese still have a desire to pray to the God when they are Cuntaka. And it is the most important that they uphold that desire. Upon they have a desire to pray then they will try to fulfill it by uttering mantra continually. This process will be useful to balancing themselves.

Cuntaka prohibited Balinese to enter the temple however it never forbids Balinese to pray.
