Vacation a la Balinese
Each month, thousands of people from every corner of the world come to Bali to spend their holidays. Bali and vacation seems to be two inseparable things but then some interesting question arise “do Balinese go on vacation?” and “if they go on vacation, where do they go?”
There are several types of answers available to these questions. The first type is the commercial answer. It usually runs as follow, “everyday is a holiday in Bali; Balinese are always on vacation, we do not need to go elsewhere for a vacation”. A more serious approach from socio-religious point of view provides another answer, which usually runs as follow, “the life of Balinese is full with socio-religious ceremonies. There are daily offerings that have to offered daily; temple ceremonies that come in regularly every six month or every year with the fact that a Balinese may belongs to more than 5 temple congregations; not to mention staggering numbers of wedding, tooth filling, cremations and other life passage ceremonies that come irregularly each years. These occupy most of Balinese spare time and make a vacation seems to be a distant prospect.
Fortunately, a more positive answer to this question exists, Balinese do go on vacation but we usually do not stay overnight, a short trip to Lakes, monkey forests, Bedugul Botanical Garden, beaches or other tourist destination is the most popular types of vacation. A vacation which is longer than a day is usually reserved for religious purpose, such as pilgrimage to various temples in Java and Lombok. Some rich Balinese may spend their holiday overseas, most by taking pilgrimage trip to India.
