World Mask Festival in North Bali
Masks are not owned by one country but they are popular culture all over the world. Each country in this world has their masks’ characteristic. IMACO (International Mask Culture and Arts Organization) see it as the world cultural heritage that needs to be preserved by heightening culture related mask, including supporting all masks festivals.
IMACO is behind the plan to hold World Mask Festival on November 23-26 2011 in Buleleng- North Bali. Buleleng is the host of World Mask festival. This region is home of its own unique mask tradition of Wayang Wong centered in the village of Tejakula, 40 kilometers east of Buleleng. This event is expected to attract 300 foreign participants representing 56 countries.
In order to anticipate the crowded of visitor and performer, the government has been preparing Gedung Budaya (the Hall) situated near the former port. It is predicted that the hall construction targeted will be completed at least on September this year will cost Rp 3 billion.
Recently, Sun Hyun Kwan, a representative of IMACO, and also one of the founders of World Mask Festival visited Buleleng on Wednesday, March 9th to inspect the preparations for the International event. Further, he asserted to the press that Buleleng is a good venue.
IMACO indeed, is trying to register as NGO list of UNESCO in which their objectives are: to build the network for international mask arts and culture based on this organization, to heighten culture related mask, and to strengthen activity and human network for member.
